Who’s Afraid of Garlic, Ginger, Chili Pepper?

Who’s Afraid of Garlic, Ginger, Chili Pepper?, Kimtschi Color Field Painting, RHEE food lab Kimtschi and Glass Ant Farm, 60 x 6 x 3 cm, 2014

Ingredients: nappa cabbage, sea salt, onions, scallions, garlic grass, watercress, Korean radish, garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes, corn syrup, sticky rice flour, sesame seeds, brined shrimp, and Asian pear.

Who’s Afraid of Garlic, Ginger, Chili Pepper? is a direct reference to “Who’s afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue?”, a color field painting by Barnett Newman. Just like in color field painting, in which the color is liberated from objective context and becomes the subject itself, the Kimtschi becomes freed from its ethnic and cultural status as a national treasure and functions as a pure expression of abstraction as a sculptural painting.
