Portraits of Esmeralda

US Surgeons Frank Gerow and Thomas Cronin executed the first silicone implant in early 1960’s, on a dog named Esmeralda. She apparently did not like the implants and chewed at the stitches, forcing the surgeons to remove them after a few weeks. What a smart, good dog! She must be a border collie!

This work is part of the project, Modern Beauty Ideals in the Age of Digital Technology.
